“the show that never ends”

Have the pols lowered the cost of health care, yet?  I’ve been contemplating offering bets of $500 or a $1000 that health care costs won’t be any lower in ten years than they are now (absent a complete collapse of economy and government), so if anyone is interested, drop me a line and I’ll figure out a way to weasel out of it.

Today was a day.  When I went to bed last night, the lake water was a little high, but not anything to worry about, after a couple solid days of rain.  I woke up to find the water had risen over the dock, with the sailboat in danger of bumping the bottom of itself where no bumper could protect it.  I cut the electricity to the dock, sloshed through the shallows in my sandals (the water wasn’t too bad, though the air was about fifty degrees), and deployed anchors to hold the boat off that which it is usually beside.  We kept an eye on the neighbor’s pontoon boat, as its canopy got closer and closer to the roof rafters above it.  The waters have yet to recede more than an inch or two, and may actually rise again over night.  The TVA is playing with the people’s generators down at the dam.

Here’s how it looked two and a half weeks ago when the water was almost even with the dock, some four inches shy of where it was today. Note the anchor off the stern, too, but plowed into the muddy bottom like an anchor should be.

And then we tore the kitchen apart.  We’re doing it methodically, don’t you know.  Some cabinets are gone from one end.  Some floor is ripped up.  Tomorrow a four by eight goes down, and then some more stuff gets ripped out, etc.  Still need to buy insulation and some quality snap together mostly wood flooring.  And some more two by sixes.  New cabinets arrive next Wednesday.  It’ll be tight.

I also spent some quality time on the roof, where the view really is stupendous, trying to ferret out the newest rainwater entry point, not having much luck.  I put down a strip of that lovely peel n’ stick aluminum adhesive backed stuff* (You’d know the brand name in a heartbeat, but I don’t want to attract the attention of the fucking morons at the FTC) in a semi-likely spot, but will certainly have to pursue the matter further on some other day.  Must purchase bucket o’ tar, tomorrow, check.

In bird news, I didn’t see the Black-crowned Night Heron today because the dock it has taken to was under water all day, but it’s been on that dock every other day this week, where it catches and swallows fish after fish.

And that’s the way it is, whatever day it is.

XOXOXXO

*It’s Peel & Seal Self-Stick Aluminum Roll Roofing, and no homeowner should be without some.
